Through Innovate UK Business Growth, SMEs that are looking to grow and scale through innovation can receive up to £15,000 in grant funding (towards a maximum project cost of £24,999) to access BCIMO’s facilities and expertise.

Qualifying businesses can use this grant funding to:

  • Receive rail-specific expert advice and technical support
  • Undertake development, testing and demonstration activities utilising BCIMO’s Rail Development & Test Site
  • Undertake market analysis, cost modelling, business‐case support and creation of industry‐relevant R&D project plans
  • Identify opportunities for R&D, collaboration, and partnership building
  • Receive commercialisation support, including improving efficiency, making their business operations more sustainable, or investigating market gaps

qualifying criteria

To qualify SMEs must meet the following criteria:

  • Businesses must be in receipt of the Innovate UK Business Growth support service, where the need has been identified by an innovation & growth specialist as part of the action planning process
  • Business must have fully prepared projects that are ready to go
  • Businesses must be a UK-registered, trading company, with up to 500 employees (250 in Northern Ireland)
  • The grant funding provided to the business will be under Minimal Financial Assistance or De minimis. The maximum value of ‘Minimal Financial Assistance’ allowed per 3 year rolling period under the ‘UK Subsidy Control Bill’ is £315,000
  • The ‘De minimis’ regulation, which has similar characteristics, but a maximum value of €300,000, remains effective for any awards to enterprises governed by the Windsor Framework or based within the EU
