Workforces of the future

Workforces are a core element, both in the development of new and existing technologies and in the effective operation of supply chains; and from the full range of practical and digital skills needed, to the intrinsic mindset to innovate. Whilst skilling and up-skilling teams is vital to business strategy, it also includes management, leadership and indeed younger people yet to enter the workplace.

Across the rail industry, its breadth and depth provide significant scope for employment and further progression within a wide variety of roles, from the design of both infrastructure and rolling stock to its construction and manufacture. In-service opportunities include maintenance roles, information technology, customer service, business operations, industry leadership… and, of course, drivers.

Our facilities at the Very Light Rail National Innovation Centre (VLRNIC) support the delivery of externally provided courses that increase the skills and capabilities of existing workforces and also develop the pipeline of talent where skill gaps exist.

Utilising our Transport Systems Simulator, we are also engaging with local schools and colleges to highlight the career opportunities available to young people.
