Vanguard Sustainable Transport Solutions are working on a project called ‘Hydroshunter’, which is the UK’s first hydrogen powered freight locomotive, incorporating a hydrogen / battery hybrid drivetrain for new built or retrofitted applications for freight operators.

The team, based in Birmingham and led by CEO Rob Gibson, are focused on delivering clean, decarbonised mobility solutions across the transport spectrum underpinned by cutting edge research, and a further focus on developing sector skills for the future.

Vanguard had been developing their technology via the University of Birmingham, but applied for the Clean Futures Accelerator programme to test and demonstrate their modular and scalable drivetrain technology in a real-world rail environment.
